Organisation Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Child Safety Training
Job Title: Principal Training and Staff Support Officer
Location: Brisbane
Supports strategic direction
Throughout my career I have demonstrated the ability to understand business and organisational
priorities and to deliver a service that aligns to and supports these priorities. I am also able to
communicate these objectives to all stakeholders and to operationalise them for the business.
While contracted to Australian Safety Learning Systems (ASLS), a Registered Training Organisation
and a provider of Workplace Health and Safety consulting, I was tasked with helping the company
to diversify and expand its business within the mining sector. I initially liaised with ASLS
management to understand the required scope and deliverables of this diversification. I then
networked and consulted with community, government and commercial stakeholders to
determine relevant opportunities. Following this, I prepared a report that gave ASLS a framework
to achieve their corporate objectives. This included the utilisation of the Industry Capability
Network (ICN) Gateway to tender for new business. Finally, I trained relevant staff in using the
Gateway to expand their business.
Achieves results
I have significant experience in leveraging the skills, knowledge and expertise of others, as well as
contributing my own expertise to deliver results. I was responsible for developing and delivering
training programs and materials to support the implementation of SAP (ECC6) Financial and Plan
to Produce modules for Alphapharm, a global pharmaceutical company whose Brisbane office was
located at Carole Park. I liaised extensively with staff at all levels and areas of Alphapharm to draw
on their corporate knowledge in determining business and production flows. This in turn allowed
me to develop efficient and effective training modules and delivery modes tailored to the business
and the people. The people included everyone from senior management to warehouse staff. The
training team which I was apart of achieved the result of 550 users and 30 super users trained on
time and within budget.
Another example relevant to this capability occurred while I was employed at OnePath Financial
Services. As the National Consolidation Partnership Manager, I worked with the Business
Development Managers (BDMs) to create innovative, low cost marketing tools. One of these was a
computer based “business in a box” tool that BDMs could provide to our clients (Financial
Planners) which helped them to seamlessly sell the benefits of our product and services. This
resulted in an increase of revenue for my employer and created efficiencies for the BDM’s in their
role. To create these tools I had to harness the knowledge of our BDMs, as well as a number of
other subject matter experts. I also had to gain an excellent understanding of the needs and
priorities of our clients.
I understand the provision of child safety services in Queensland occurs within a complicated
statutory environment, with many stakeholders contributing their knowledge and experience to
deliver the best possible outcomes for Queensland children. The examples above clearly
demonstrate my ability to draw together the diverse expertise of others to deliver an excellent
service.
Supports productive working relationships
Another position I held within OnePath was as an eBusiness Training Consultant and Adviser.
Throughout my 4 years with OnePath (formally ING investments & Oasis), the company
underwent a merger which resulted in significant organisational change impacting on the
business, the people, and a vast array of operational policies and procedures. During this
significant change process it was my responsibility, via the delivery of extensive training, to
transition staff to new customer management systems and business platforms. This required that I
both utilised and nurtured my existing networks and built new and productive relationships with
incoming staff. Staff respected my technical expertise and grew to see me as part of the team, as
someone simply dedicated to providing them with the tools they needed to do their business
better. I educated over 568 individual clients within the last 8 months of employment with
OnePath, utilising one-on-one training, group meetings, webLink, video conferencing and seminars
on topics including creating efficiencies. This resulted in an increased use of applications and
production, and I consistently received positive participant feedback during this process. It is also
relevant that this change needed to be aligned with the priorities of senior management and co-
ordinated with other training staff across several states. This group met on a fortnightly basis to
ensure training delivery continued to support business imperatives. These meetings were also a
forum for training staff to work collaboratively on a nationwide basis, sharing knowledge,
information and expertise to meet client needs. We worked together to ensure the
organisationally driven staff development and training agenda was delivered effectively at a
regional, state and national level.
Displays personal drive and integrity
While employed as a Financial Planner I was subject to the Financial Planning Association Code of
Professional Practice, which is issued under the auspices of the Australian Securities and
Investments Commission. The Code includes general standards of conduct to be observed by
Financial Planners and has three components – Code of Ethics, Practice Standards and Rules of
Professional Conduct. As you would assume, the Code is extremely stringent and demands the
highest level of ethical and professional conduct of Planners. I clearly have the skills and
knowledge to operate strictly within the boundaries of organisational processes, legal frameworks
and public policy constraints. I would easily become familiar with the departmental Code of
Conduct and Values.
I have always treated people fairly and equitably. I have delivered training and other services to
people of every cultural, economic and societal background. As a trainer, I am only interested in
ensuring that I impart the skills and knowledge in a way that is most useful to my audience. My
volunteer work as an events co-ordinator for charity functions run by the Association of Financial
Advisers (AFA) also demonstrates my personal drive and integrity. I helped organise AFA events,
such as movie nights, balls and Christmas parties, that contributed to the Charities arm of the AFA.
Charities supported by the AFA foundation include Make-A-Wish, Save the Children, Beyond Blue,
Australian Red Cross, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Kokoda Challenge.
Communicates with influence
I have delivered training in all possible settings, to a vast variety of groups via an extensive number
of delivery modes. My audience has included Senior Executives, other Trainers, Financial Planners,
administration staff, finance employees and warehouse staff. I target my message to the audience
and the context.
I also have extensive expertise in utilising electronic resources to deliver training to regionally
diverse organisations. For example, while working with OnePath I successfully used WebEx (an
interactive, online training tool) to deliver learning to my clients. WebEx includes online sessions,
integrated voice conferencing, and the ability to record classes for later playback. I also have
experience delivering formal training via videoconferencing, face to face sessions, phone based
and other web based delivery modes.
Another relevant example that demonstrates my communication skills and my ability to develop
and deliver clear messages was the project I undertook with Alphapharm. I was required to source
and apply an extensive range of technical data to develop the competency-based training
materials needed to transition staff successfully from Glovia to SAP. The materials I developed to
ensure the message was communicated effectively included exercise guides, presentations, work
instructions and tools in line with organisational procedures. These materials were used by Mylan
Global at 3 more SAP implementation sites. I delivered the training sessions within a classroom
environment and received consistently positive participant feedback.
Technical/role specific
I understand that the legal framework that guides Child Protection Services in Queensland is the
Child Protection Act 1999. I understand that the core of the act is that the welfare and best
interests of the child are paramount and that the preferred way of ensuring a child's welfare is
through support of the child's family. It also clearly stipulates that there should be appropriate
coordination, consultation and collaboration with families, other professionals, agencies and the
community, and that at all times services should be culturally appropriate.
I also have perused the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020 and
understand the supporting outcomes, strategies and indicators for change outlined in the
Framework. I have also read some of the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry final
report released in July this year. I understand the report represents a significant shift in the child
protection philosophy – away from coercive practices, towards early preventative intervention
that occurs before a family reaches crisis.
I am confident that I can work with the existing child protection legislation and policies to develop
and deliver appropriate training and support to relevant staff. I am also sure that I can work with
all stakeholders to adapt my service to the changing focus and trends in the practice of child
protection. My relevant experience in this area relates to a change in the legislative framework
governing the delivery of services by Financial Planners and my role in training staff in the
changes. It was my role to develop the training material to support this transition and ensure that
staff understood their new compliance responsibilities under the legislation.
Another example relevant to this capability relates to my acceptance of the responsibility of OHS
coordinator at OnePath. I conducted monthly team talks with all staff members focusing on
compliance with the relevant legislation, as well as relevant OHS issues in the work place. I also
managed workplace incidents and worked with all stakeholders to ensure a safe workplace.
As demonstrated previously, I have broad knowledge and expertise in all facets of training
development and delivery. I can provide expert advice and contribute to the development of
training curriculum to ensure development and training initiatives translate to high standards of
service delivery. Finally, my experience while contracted to Mathisi shows I have the technical
expertise to prepare and maintain administration and operational policies, procedures and
processes in compliance with Australian Quality Training Framework requirements. I have the skills
and knowledge to deliver and co-ordinate all types of training and development initiatives, and I
have the drive and commitment to ensure these are delivered efficiently and effectively within any
type of service delivery organisation.
