Supports strategic direction
Whilst working as a Pathologist for the Princess Alexandra Hospital, I discovered how my role contributed to the joint achievement of team goals. This was demonstrated upon my identification of issues that potentially impacted on the efficiency of my role. An aspect of my duties involved checking for the accuracy of patient particulars to ensure a positive match with the patient’s specimens. Any mistake had the potential to cause devastating effects for the lives of our patients. Recognising room for improvement, I implemented a trial of safe work practice involving the documentation of patient particulars into a computer program called AUSLAB. Overseeing the recording and indexing of all inward and outward correspondence, I ensured that the pathology team was able to sharpen their skills and sustain a deeper clarity of processes and policies. As a result of the trial, we recognised a substantial improvement of the accuracy of specimen labels, which in turn resulted in the permanent implementation of this safe work practice within the Pathology Department.
Achieves results
As a Purchasing and Administration Clerk for the Royal Australian Air force, I utilised my expertise to purchase sensitive items within the Middle East on behalf of the Australian Government. Researching and networking within the community assisted in the correct selection of items for purchase. Working independently and in a foreign environment, I proved resourceful in working within agreed priorities, as well as within the Government budget. Maintaining accurate recordings of accounts and expenditures, I documented where I sourced materials in order to provide insight to the Purchasing and Administration Clerk who would take my place at the end of my contract. Upon completion of my assignment, I was presented with the Commanders Award in recognition of my achievements.
Supports productive working relationships
As a Client Service Assistant with the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Queensland, it is imperative for me to work as a team and share essential information as the Department has the highest responsibility in managing individuals with various high-level needs. Working closely with various healthcare professionals and colleagues, regular information is delivered between one another in order to stay abreast of the ever-changing needs of our clients. Client behavioural problems, including but not limited to, aggression, frustration and dangerous behaviour which can often accumulate to communication obstacles and medical treatment concerns, need to be openly discussed between colleagues to ensure that each member is in agreement when clinical handover is to take place. Learning opportunities provided by the Department, enable each member of the Client Service Assistance team to increase their knowledge of behavioural management strategies, as well as attend current first aid training and learn innovative ways of integrating positive behavioural support plans. Each opportunity I have quickly taken advantage of in order to improve my professional development to move forward along my career pathway.
An additional responsibility within my current role involves proactively assessing clients’ individual needs in recognition of their individual capabilities. This articulate and thorough assessment
achieved by;
Monitoring the client’s anxiety levels and utilising the support plan in place as required
Delivering assistance regarding the client’s spending, budgeting and bill payments
Administering customised medication that has been prescribed by a Physician
Assessing and recognising trigger points to behavioural issues for the client
Providing job seeking assistance that is suited to client’s individual abilities
Acting as a constant positive role model for the client to shadow
Discouraging socially unacceptable behaviour from the client
Attempting to integrate the client into the community
Upon completion of the assessment, I am fully-prepared to advise, liaise and assist all healthcare staff with the effective application of behavioural and medical treatment for the client.
Displays personal drive and integrity
In my current role, I am expected to act professionally at all times and operate within the boundaries of the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Queensland processes, as well as legal and public policy constraints, as I am frequently on public display whilst I assist my client’s integration into the community.
Providing accurate advice on less-complex issues and taking personal responsibility for the accurate completion of work has been demonstrated in my aforementioned role of Purchasing and Administration Clerk for the Royal Australian Air force. Throughout that role, I was entrusted with purchasing materials that were highly sensitive. Such purchases had to be made with personal integrity and in line with the obligation that I was required to be diligent in achieving value for money, as I was wholly accountable for every purchase that I made on behalf of the Australian Government. Certain sensitive material that was presented for me to locate and purchase, was beyond my expertise. Acknowledging and utilising the colleagues that I had access to with the relevant expertise, I availed myself in seeking their knowledge and ascertained the specifications and preferences required to ensure the accurate material was purchased.
Communicates with influence
Working with mentally disadvantaged clients, clear communication is essential and quite often, I am confronted with inappropriate behaviour from a client. It is company policy that no physical contact is to occur between the client and myself, particularly as I am seen to be in a position of authority. The only acceptable line of defence to be used, are my clear communication skills. Influencing my client to take a seat, I provide structured oral communication that is easy to follow and comprehend. Speaking confidently, telling the truth and keeping my tone in a professional manner ensure that I do not fuel the frustration of a client, thus demonstrating my emotional resilience and effective skills to communicate with influence.
