Organising your work, making sound decisions and achieving outcomes
Throughout my professional career I have demonstrated excellent organisational skills and have a
proven record in managing multiple priorities and ensuring that work is completed by required
deadlines. As a Senior Qualified Carpenter I have extensive knowledge of my field, substantial
practical experience and well-developed judgement skills concerning industry compliance
requirements. This means I can accurately estimate how long specific projects will take, which in
turn allows me to schedule required work, making sure it fits in with other ongoing tasks onsite.
Part of working effectively on projects includes being able to integrate your work with that of
other trades people. For a job to be completed in a timely manner you need to organise your work
to fit in with the overall building plan and schedule. This means working as part of team and
ensuring that your contribution supports the work of others. I am a flexible employee and if
necessary I can adapt the organisation of the work I do to fit in with requirements of others. I also
show initiative, knowing when to make decisions to progress work and when to refer matters to
the Supervisor or Foreman. In my current and previous roles I have also been responsible for
organising and coordinating the work of apprentices. This includes overseeing the quality and
standard of their work as well as ensuring it fits in with the other stages of the building project.
I have a proven record of achieving quality outcomes throughout my professional career. I ensure
that every project I complete is of an excellent standard. This includes taking responsibility for
work being structurally sound, compliant with required codes, visually appealing and meeting
client requirements.
Communicating and working effectively with other people
Within the construction industry, I have worked with people from a diverse range of social and
cultural backgrounds, and have a proven ability to interact effectively and respectfully with people
from all walks of life. I also recognise the value of individual differences, and the benefits that
come from having different perspectives and views in the workplace.
I have substantial experience in working effectively in both small and large teams. I have always
worked hard to build positive relationships with other team members. On the job this means
treating colleagues with respect and courtesy, sharing learning and supporting the contributions of
others, in particular apprentice workers.
As a Senior Qualified Carpenter I have to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders
during building projects. As mentioned previously this includes working with other trades people
and supervising and directing the work of apprentices to ensure an efficient approach to
scheduling tasks onsite. In my current role I also need to communicate regularly with the Site
Supervisor. He is often extremely busy so I need to structure my communications with him to be
extremely clear, concise and to the point. I also need to make sure that the information I provide
contains enough details to enable the Supervisor to make informed decisions about ongoing work.
Effective communication is also important to ensure the safety of everyone involved in building
projects. I actively contribute to safety walks, liaising with representatives from other trades and
leading contractors to identify and minimise risks onsite. I also ensure that I take note of and pass
on any relevant information to my own colleagues and apprentices.
I also have effective written communication skills. I have completed a Certificate IV and a Diploma
of Building and Construction, both of which required the completion of concise, well written
assignments. I also have experience in completing accurate Inspection and Test Plan Forms and
Safety Incident Forms as required.
Applying technical knowledge, expertise and skills
Throughout my career I have been required to effectively apply the knowledge and skills I have
gained through my experience and training to the projects I manage. I use this knowledge and
expertise to achieve a number of professional outcomes. This includes ensuring that the work
undertaken is fully compliant with the required building code standards, that the end result is fully
functional and that when completed the project is visually pleasing. I also need to share this
knowledge and experience in the workplace, passing it on to apprentices and more junior
colleagues as required.
To further my skills in my profession I completed a Certificate IV and a Diploma of Building and
Construction. My studies enhanced my knowledge of the legislation and regulations that govern
the industry and have given me a greater understanding of working safely and managing risk, the
importance of accurate reports, managing budget and ensuring quality throughout projects. I
apply this knowledge in my current role and also used this information extensively when building
my own home.
As mentioned, my recent studies often focused on ensuring a culture of workplace health and
safety (WHS) on the job and I also hold a current White Card. I have developed a strong
understanding of WHS requirements, including the principles of risk management and the
prevention of injury and illness in the construction industry. I understand how this information is
relevant in the workplace and apply it every day as part of my standard work practices. I always
wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, work safely, minimise risks and avoid
hazards. I also actively participate in safety walks and talks, and encourage others to work safely at
all times.
