To whom it may concern,
Please accept this as my Statement of Claims addressing the selection criteria for the position of Senior Regional Officer for Transport NSW. My experience and expertise as illustrated by my responses to the criteria below make me ideal for this role and I will bring a wealth of knowledge with advanced leadership skills and experience in influencing and transforming attitudes within environmental management and long term experience in the application of business management principles, Occupational Health and Safety, legislative, and quality control compliance.
How your skills and experience have prepared you to exceed in this role
My extensive management and leadership experience and a thorough understanding of the market and customer needs is demonstrated by my past years in GrainCorp where I assisted regional managers with the development of their business plans. I was heavily involved in setting business goals, targets and administering budgets and played a vital role within the Human Resource Strategy and, as a subject matter expert, was instrumental in developing and implementing how learning and development takes place for employees within the Storage and Logistics area. This resulted in the implementation of the highly successful Learning@GrainCorp program where the upskills of employees were enhanced and improved.
My personal drive through appropriate management, my experience and expertise with budget reporting, the implementation of labour utilisation strategies and working with both internal as well as external customers and other stakeholders resulted in a half yearly result with the Central NSW Profit & Loss (CNSW P&L) of $3.2 million dollars ahead of budget.
As an example of my focus on knowing the market and the customers’ needs and wants, and how they work, during my time as Operations Manager, I liaised with a customer to work out a date when they needed their product (which contained contaminates). Once this date was set I developed and implemented a project to clean the commodity safely while still satisfying the customers’ needs. I monitored this project through to completion to ensure it met all safety directives and the result was the deadline was met and remained fully under budget.
Your most significant and relevant achievement in stakeholder management or interagency agreements
Having accumulated a broad management expertise covering operations management at Grain Corp over several years, I have accumulated the acumen and management skills to provide operational service and local geographical and demographic input into Regional Service Planning. This includes experience in managing S&L SHE professionals at all levels to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and the alignment of processes as appropriate. This is demonstrated through my handling of the changes to the application process of harvest casuals. To keep in line with one of Graincorps’ core value of safety, I was tasked to develop a health and safety online module for harvest casuals to aid in the completion of a psychometric safety test and to capture new data.
This involved the coordination of 3000 harvest casuals through planning and organising their learning material and training days. Additionally I had to liaise with Payroll to ensure that the casual were correctly paid during their training days. There was some initial reluctance to make the changes required but I employed my negotiating and communication skills to ensure all the stakeholders and casuals were happy with the changes. The success of this program is indicative of the way Senior Managers embraced the online recruitment process. Additionally the success of the harvest recruitment process has resulted in the reduction of safety incidents to near zero and the continual improvement of business.
Another example was during my position as Head Teacher at Dubbo Suspension Centre, I developed, established and implemented the day to day operations of the centre. I took a consultative approach with the school, regional and state level personnel to apply best practice with role statement, operational guidelines and developing the documentation which is now issued to all new centres established throughout NSW. My understanding of the syllabus from Stage 2 through to Stage 6 and my skills in adapting programs to suit student needs is reflected in the success of the program. Being responsible for the development of programs for all Key Learning Areas (KLA’s), Individual Education Plans and Individual Behaviour Management Plans of the students in my class, I successfully took on additional roles such as, PDHPE, Science and Technology coordinator, First Aid Officer, Federation Representative and Sports coordinator. Additionally I designed and implemented computerised report system and outcomes based assessment, developed whole school curriculum for all KLA’s, Stage 1 – 5 and many other extracurricular activities.
