Job Title: Administration Officer (Medical Recruitment)
Word Limit: Maximum 1-2 pages, dot points acceptable
Location: Brisbane – QEII Jubilee Hospital, Coopers Plains
Key Attribute/Behaviour 1 – Throughout my career to date I have demonstrated the ability to work both autonomously and within a team environment. In my most recent role, as a Grade 3 Teacher at Nerang State School, I worked on a job share basis, coordinating with my job share partner to ensure that we delivered our objectives. In all of my teaching roles I have worked as an integral member of school staff, participating in the year level team in larger schools, and in the overall teaching and administration team in smaller schools.
Working autonomously, I set priorities in terms of lesson planning and delivery, achieving results and meeting tight deadlines by delivering materials in line with the national curriculum, carrying out assessments and undertaking mandatory reporting. Prior to the introduction of the national curriculum, I carried out structured lesson planning, commencing with unit plans and then breaking these down into weekly plans, daily plans and lesson plans, setting priorities and using calendar and template tools to complete a high volume of work within limited timeframes. Following the implementation of the national curriculum, I planned and prioritised my work to ensure that I delivered all units within mandated timeframes, completed assessment and report cards for a class of 32-34 students, and facilitated good workflow with my job share partner. We consistently achieved results by successfully delivering, assessing and reporting on all units required under the national curriculum each term/semester.
Key Attribute/Behaviour 2 – As a former teacher, I used and developed my oral and written communication abilities extensively in teaching, administration, liaison with parents and guardians, and providing extra-curricular support. I used my written skills to prepare lesson plans, teaching materials, reports, and complex end of year student academic and behavioural profiles. I used various tools and resources to prepare these reports, depending on the school size and resources. The reports include grades and statements based on student data collected during the year, commentary on attendance and behaviour, written individually for each child.
I used my highly effective oral communication skills to deliver lessons to students, and liaise with their parents and guardians on academic progress, behaviour and attendance. I used my excellent negotiation skills to work with school Principals and management teams to acquire the necessary resources for class activities, and also used my liaison and negotiation skills with external providers. For example, at Nerang State School I was responsible for organising a number of extra-curricular activities, including school fetes, swimming carnivals and a school camp to Boyne Island. For the school camp, I used my interpersonal skills to lead the team and manage all aspects of a successful trip. My role included all liaison and negotiations with suppliers to achieve best value for money in terms of accommodation and transport, and also working with the other teachers and parent volunteers to agree all logistics and activities for the camp.
Key Attribute/Behaviour 3 – I have demonstrated advanced computer skills across a number of systems and programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, interactive whiteboards, and school specific systems such as Oneschool. I used my computer skills to develop lessons, accessing materials and resources on the internet, incorporating these into PowerPoint presentations and Word handouts, and using the interactive whiteboard to deliver lessons.
As outlined above, I used various tools and resources, including Excel, to prepare complex reports, accessing student data collected during the year, interpreting this data into grades and commentary on attendance and behaviour, and providing advice tailored for each child. This data is accessed mainly from the Oneschool software system, which I used to record student behaviour, attendance and academic progress including test scores. I also used the system to record student behaviours and identify trends and patterns, facilitating advice and decision making at both the individual, and the policy and procedure level. For example, in Aramac State School I worked as part of a team to develop the school wide positive behaviour framework (PBF), which aligned teaching support with student behaviour. The framework was based on data collected, collated and interpreted from various data sources, including Oneschool, and we regularly evaluated and adjusted the PBF in response to changes and trends in the data.
Key Attribute/Behaviour 4 – In my work as a teacher, I have demonstrated the ability to solve problems, and the ability to liaise and effectively consult with a range of stakeholders, including senior management, on issues including resourcing, policy, and student behaviour. For example, a parent raised concerns with me that their child was being bullied. In response, I liaised and consulted with the school Principal, the child, and the parents of both children involved, in order to provide appropriate support and intervention. As a result of my effective consultation, my action plan to solve the problem was approved. This included supervision of the child at lunchtimes and during other breaks, discussions with the child and the alleged bully, and extensive contact with both sets of parents and the school Principal.
As a result, the parents of the bullied child were fully aware of the measures in place to support their child, and the progress being made, and the parents of the alleged bully were supportive in addressing the behaviour. The outcome was that the bullying stopped, and both children were able to better participate in school. The Principal remained informed and appraised of the situation throughout, and was happy with the level of consultation and with the positive outcome.
Key Attribute/Behaviour 5 – Through my work with Education Queensland, teaching in state schools, I have demonstrated the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of legislation, procedures, policies and regulations, and can apply this ability to the recruitment of resident medical officers, including medical registration and immigration. For example, while I was working at Nerang State School the new national curriculum was introduced, a policy change which led to new procedures, regulations and reporting affecting all major aspects of my role. I rapidly acquired knowledge of the new curriculum and how to apply it in my role by participating in explanatory meetings, working through an information folder outlining the new procedures, and applying this knowledge on the job.
As a result of my ability to rapidly acquire legislative, policy, procedural and regulatory knowledge, I was able to quickly and efficiently adapt to the change from carrying out topic based lesson planning to delivering pre-planned units of work. I understood the underlying principle of the changes, to move all students onto a national curriculum enabling sharing of best practice and comparison of school results and outcomes. I successfully applied the new system, including assessment and reporting, and contributed to the coordination and implementation of the new procedures.
During my career to date, I have undertaken ongoing professional development, which has given me skills in acquiring and using new knowledge in the field, and also an understanding of professional registration processes, which I can apply to medical registration.
Key Attribute/Behaviour 6 – Through my work with Education Queensland, I have developed knowledge of contemporary human resource management issues. I have undertaken training and orientation in Code of Conduct, Child Protection and First Aid, including anaphylaxis response. I understood and practiced my duty of care for my students’ wellbeing and safety, and have good health and safety knowledge which I have applied in the workplace.
From January to March 2008 I taught Grade 3 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Thamarrurr Catholic School in the Northern Territory. In this role I taught Indigenous students, and worked alongside an Indigenous teacher, who delivered lessons in the local language while I taught in English. I undertook cultural orientation in Darwin prior to commencing this role, and through the experience further developed and applied my diversity and equal opportunity awareness and understanding.
Throughout my career to date I have worked to meet the needs of diverse students, through a consistent commitment to high quality, respectful, caring and helpful support for all students, families and colleagues. I have a strong work ethic underpinned by professional principles and practices, and am keen to apply my significant knowledge, skills and abilities in a new role.
