Selection Criteria Responses
Strong Oral and Written communication skills relevant to this position
I have well developed oral and written skills with the ability to quickly build rapport and develop long lasting professional relationships. In my previous roles I have been responsible for communicating effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders and producing a range of written communications including business reports. I communicate well with clients, colleagues and management and am always thoughtful of being clear and professional in my communications.
I understand that good communication is built on active listening skills and am always sure to be polite, attentive and professional when liaising with clients. I also have the ability to modify my communication style to suit my audience to ensure the most effective communication. For example, as a Supervisor in the Graphics department of STW Channel 9 and WIN Television I have been managing the design work across all media including on-air, promotional, print, web and multimedia. I have been in this role for over 15 years and have been highly successful communicating with a range of staff to ensure all design is consistent with company branding.
Within the Graphics department I have a range of responsibilities that cover managing a graphic design team, coordinating workflow, providing artistic and technical direction, and assuring all on-air and print deadlines are met.
- Demonstrated project management skills including the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
I have always taken a results based approach to my work and have proven success in previous project management roles. I understand and engage risk and have the ability to continuously identify, monitor and review risks to enable up to date and informative reporting and manage my responsibilities within guidelines and project/position parameters. My well developed organisation, time management and workload prioritisation skills have enabled me to develop, lead, and consult on several current and emerging issues usually aimed at business process improvements and adjusting to the ever changing media landscape.
In my current role as a Supervisor in the Graphics department of STW Channel 9 and WIN Television, I have gained valuable skills and experience performing a range of responsibilities including:
- Identifying opportunities for business process improvements;
- Initiating, planning, developing and delivering projects;
- Administration planning and resource procurement for projects;
- Project budget management and administration;
- Reviewing and implementing contractor agreements;
- Assessing and reporting on variations and costings for Projects; and
- Closing completed projects ensuring all documentation is accurate, completed and recorded.
For example, working at STW Channel 9 and WIN Television has taught me how integral time management skills are to producing quality News Bulletins in the 24hr news cycle. On a daily basis I am always managing multiple projects such as doing daily News Graphics and preparing graphics for News paper press Ads. This involves managing a team of highly skilled professionals and ensuring everything comes together by the 4pm deadline (often very fast paced and stressful work but I love it).
As part of my responsibilities I am often working with a range of stakeholders on developing local production shows, organising and running meetings, and ensuring projects are completed on time and on budget. For example, a current local show we do for WIN TV involved a set, graphics and opening title sequence. I developed the look for the show and outsourced the set builders to come up with a solution to complement the look of our show with proofs so they had a complete clear understanding of the idea. Whilst the branding for the show was quite involved, I was still successful completing my daily news and press requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain web based information.
I have the clearly demonstrated ability to develop and maintain web based information. For example, I successfully maintained the Postcards Web site for a number of years. This involved uploading pictures and information on a weekly basis. As the site grew the functionality was expanded to incorporate the running of competitions. I am committed to lifelong learning and continuous improvement and in order to complete my work to a high quality I undertook formal study in HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver.
As part of my responsibilities at STW Channel 9 and WIN Television I have set up an in-house Production Department Intranet site with contact details and a showreel of our services. This incorporates a mix of desktop publishing, design, and database setup and maintenance. Throughout my studies and work experience I have developed high level desktop publishing and design skills and am proficient and an advanced user of several related software applications. I have produced work for several highly successful productions including Underbelly, 60 Minutes and Rescue.
- Knowledge and understanding of Government processes.
I have an in depth knowledge and understanding of government processes with the ability to apply information relating to government processes, organizational functions, and protocols. Throughout my career I have gained the ability to quickly understand and apply government regulatory systems, processes and legislative requirements as they relate to the media industry.
I am committed to APS values and have clearly demonstrated my integrity, initiative drive and adaptability over my career. I have read the APS Values in section 10 of the Public Service Act 1999 and understand that it provides for an ethical, fair and flexible workplace free from discrimination. I understand that, as a public service employee, you are legally bound by all the standards specified in the APS Code of Conduct. I recognise my responsibility to ensure my behaviour reflects these values. I interact with a wide and diverse range of people on a daily basis and my references can confirm my personal drive and integrity would be well suited to working for the Department of Culture and the Arts.
In my previous roles I have often worked in fast paced and stressful work environments and have been able to be resilient and produce consistently high quality work. I am committed to lifelong learning and continuous improvement and am always committed to action and achieving results. When professional development opportunities have been available in previous roles I have always been keen to attend and complete training to improve myself and work performance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with people at all levels within a team environment.
I pride myself on my ability to work effectively with a wide range of people and build and develop productive working relationships to support organisational culture and achieve results. My references can confirm my strong support for all staff to be given a fair go and individual differences and diversity is respected. It is important all staff members’ contributions are valued and that they feel empowered to make a positive contribution in their role within the organisation. My experience in Information/Media has provided me with in depth understanding of the value of professional networks in business and how important it is to nurture relationships and facilitate cooperation and partnerships.
I really enjoy supporting, training, mentoring and professionally developing staff providing them with all the skills and resources necessary to perform their work to the best of their abilities. Throughout my career I have always tried to make a positive contribution towards organisational culture and promote a pleasant and successful work environment.
Due to my extensive experience and expertise in these areas I have been invited to lecture and develop curriculum at the Perth Institute of Technology.
