Organisation: Department of Immigration and Border Protection
Job Title: Senior Intelligence Analyst
Word Limit: 2 Pages max
Location: Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney
With over eight years of experience as a Police Officer, in addition to two years as an Investigator, I have gained extensive experience within intelligence, national security and law enforcement environments. As a Police Officer, I built on and applied high-level knowledge of law enforcement investigation principles and techniques through undertaking complex enquiries and investigations. This involved acting on and providing intelligence related to a diverse range of criminal activity. Moreover, I have strengthened my knowledge and skills in these areas through the completion of a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, in which I studied units in Statistics for Social Science Research, Social Science Research Methods, as well as Crime Analysis and Investigation. My past roles and qualifications provide me with the advantage of widespread practical experience and strong theoretical knowledge.
Possessing highly developed research and analytical skills, I have the ability to assess situations and situate appropriate measures in place to create positive solutions. This has been demonstrated extensively whilst undertaking my role as Airport Duty Manager and Senior Border Force Officer with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). Within this role, I have been successful in indentifying high-risk passengers through the interrogation of departmental systems, including researching flight and passenger lists, and assessing information against a number of risk factors. Proactive in gathering intelligence pertaining to passengers, I surpass research expectations for requirements to make informed decisions regarding immigration clearance. Combined with undertaking interviews with passengers deemed as at-risk, I analyse and utilise this information to build a holistic profile that clearly informs my decision-making.
My current role is situated within a high tempo airport environment and I am responsible for managing my own competing priorities, as well as those of a team of Border Force Officers. Within my role, I am constantly assessing and re-assessing workflows, prioritising tasks, and forward-planning our workload in order to meet all priorities within this busy and demanding environment. Moreover, I ensure that immigration clearance decisions are made within tightly legislated timeframes by utilising my organisational skills to allocate resources such as interview rooms and equipment. All of these tasks require different time inputs with varying and often conflicting deadlines, and I have consistently demonstrated my success managing each priority in order to ensure that all operational outcomes are met.
Experience gained with the Police Force demonstrates my ability to deliver high quality intelligence projects. Part of my role was to compile intelligence reports for briefings, many of which I was responsible for facilitating during my time as Acting Sergeant. The success of my reports and briefings was accomplished by embracing a calculated and deliberate approach that included taking into account the overall intentions of the briefing and the goals that underpinned these. Most recently, I played an integral role in the provision of information to Border Intelligence Officers with DIBP regarding the identification and capture of a criminal cohort. This involved gathering and compiling information to assist the officers with profiling, and as a result of my comprehensive understanding of the Border Continuum, the intelligence that I provided was clear, concise and high-quality.
Throughout my career, all of my positions have been customer focused, and I have a record of accomplishment for delivering beyond expected service outcomes. Whether it is serving customers that come through the airport, providing advice to internal stakeholders, or liaising with the Australian Federal Police to facilitate the sharing of information, my primary goal is to deliver a high level of customer service, whatever form that customer may take. As a representative of DIBP, I take ownership for ensuring that all of my customers are educated, for example when explaining the reasons behind infringing an airline for breaching their responsibilities. This collaborative approach to stakeholder engagement and support has ensured that all parties are well aware of their responsibilities with regards to immigration legislation, and has led to strong working relationships.
A confident and experienced communicator, I possess excellent written and verbal communication skills that have been honed throughout my career by communicating to a diverse range of stakeholders. The key to my successful interactions is based on my ability to communicate clear, concise and accurate information that is focused on the objective. For example, within my current role, when drafting legal documentation, I ensure that all legislative requirements are referred to, and in a language that is easily understandable. As I deal with many non-English speaking customers, I am mindful of jargon and provide clear, compelling and concise reasoning behind any decision that I am putting forward.
My communication skills extend to my high-level presentation capabilities, which have been verified in instances where I present information when representing DIBP at meetings with stakeholders such as the Australian Federal Police, Department of Transport, or Quarantine Domestic. This was clearly demonstrated during a recent meeting at Gold Coast Airport, where I was responsible for translating the technical specifications regarding the operation of new CCTV equipment. Furthermore, my current position of responsibility demands exceptional communication and presentation skills to ensure that all staff are clearly aware of their obligations and the latest procedures and processes. My skills ensure that my team are consistently organised and on track to achieve operational outcomes.
