Due to the location of the broken-down bus, I identified that the impact of this incident would cause an entire city block to be closed down until a safe resolution was enacted. Without hesitation, I was proactive in the traffic management of the incident, attending the site to begin assessment and resolution practices. Commencing with the safe and strategic placement of witches hats to block off the impacted lane, I was instrumental in the achievement of funnelling traffic diversion around the bus incident. Coordinating with the bus driver, I performed the implementation of a contraflow and put into place an emergency incident plan. Best showcased within my current position, I identified that the 442 afternoon service from the Queen Victoria Building in York Street, in the heart of Sydney, to Balmain, was not providing sufficient services to Balmain Wharf due to services terminating at Gladstone Park. By researching the situation and reviewing driver journals, I was able to apply five additional services to fill the gap, which not only satisfied our customers, but it exceeded their expectations. Delivering a successful outcome to all stakeholders, I thoroughly understood the geographically diverse road networks and service delays, that enabled me to propose, develop and implement a schedule change recommendation.
Effective traffic management, particularly during road incidents, is a multi-agency activity. A Traffic Commander relies heavily on communication, co-ordination and close partnerships with the emergency services, Police, Fire and Ambulance as well as other stakeholders.
